weight loss tips for wedding season

It’s that time of the year again. The cards are arriving, the lehengas are ready, and the WhatsApp groups are buzzing. But for my clients in Delhi, “Wedding Season” often comes with a side of anxiety: “Surbhi, I’ve lost 5 kgs. Will I gain it all back after attending three weddings next week?”

Living in Delhi means celebrating, and celebrating means food. I never tell my clients to sit in a corner with a salad while everyone eats Butter Chicken. The secret isn’t abstinence; it’s strategy.

Here is my “Survival Guide” to enjoying Delhi weddings without ruining your waistline.

Strategy 1: The “Calorie Banking” Technique

If you have a wedding to attend at 8:00 PM, your diet starts at 8:00 AM.

  • Breakfast: Heavy and protein-rich (e.g., Paneer Bhurji or Eggs). This keeps you full.
  • Lunch: Very light. A bowl of Dal or soup. No Roti.
  • 4:00 PM Snack: This is crucial. Eat a small bowl of yogurt or an apple. Never go to a wedding hungry. If you arrive starving, you will attack the first fried snack you see.

Strategy 2: The “Eat This, Not That” Buffet Guide

The wedding buffet is a minefield, but there are safe zones.

  • Appetizers (Snacks):
    • Avoid: Spring rolls, Honey Chilli Potato, Malai Tikka (loaded with cream).
    • Choose: Tandoori Mushroom, Chicken Tikka (Dry), Seekh Kebab, or Paneer Tikka (shake off the extra marinade).
  • Main Course:
    • Avoid: Butter Naan, Dal Makhani (it’s mostly cream), Fried Rice.
    • Choose: Tandoori Roti, Yellow Dal (Tadka), Mix Veg, Salads.
  • Dessert:
    • The hardest part! Apply the “Three Bite Rule.” Take your favorite sweet (Moong Dal Halwa or Jalebi), eat three conscious bites to satisfy the craving, and leave the rest.

Strategy 3: The Alcohol Trap

Alcohol is empty calories, but the bigger problem is the “Chakhna” (snacks) you eat with it.

  • Stick to clear spirits (Vodka/Gin) with water or soda.
  • Avoid sugary cocktails or juices.
  • Hydrate: For every glass of alcohol, drink one full glass of water.

The Morning After: The Recovery Plan

Did you overeat? Don’t guilt-trip yourself. It happens.

  • Do not skip breakfast. Wake up and drink 1 liter of water.
  • Have a light breakfast like Papaya or Coconut Water to flush out the bloating (sodium).
  • Get back to your normal “Ghar Ka Khana” routine immediately.
